Cole Porter wrote this song while travelling in Indonesia in 1935. A Beguine was originally a Christian lay woman of the 13th or 14th century living in a religious community without formal vows, but in the Creole of the Caribbean, especially in Martinique and Guadeloupe, the term came to mean "white woman", and then to be applied to a style of music and dance, and in particular a slow, close couples' dance. This combination of French ballroom dance and Latin folk dance became popular in Paris and spread further abroad in the 1940s, largely due to the influence of the Porter song. Josephine Baker danced to it in her return to the US with the Ziegfeld Folies in 1936 but it wasn't until Artie Shaw arranged the song in a swing version that it became a big hit - one of the biggest of the Swing Era.

Vargas was born in Peru, the son of a well-known photogrpaher. He moved to the US after studying art in Europe and some of his first work was movie posters (most famous being "The Sin of Nora Moran") then after working for Ziegfeld he became famous in the 1940s as the creator of iconic World War II era pin-ups for Esquire magazine known as "Vargas Girls." The nose art of many World War II aircraft was adapted from these Esquire pin-ups. Many of Vargas' works from his period with Esquire are now held by the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, which was given those works in 1980 along with a large body of other art from the magazine.

I've seen some of these images in the fifties...
Old photographs depicted some on Bomber Aircraft WW 2...
And as always, there were some hanging in the
maintenance hangers and probably still are...
Thanks for sharing, EGI
