That proverb is a wonderful description of one of the fundamental truths of life, yet one that is often lost on Judeo-Christianity: life as we know it is inconceivable without suffering.

"Whoever toucheth her shall not be innocent" refers to the fact that anyone who experiences anything in life, anyone who "touches" life, will lose their blissful ignorance as they become aware of the duality of all things. Happiness is the absence of sadness; peace is the absence of strife; rest is the absence of tension. To know one side of the coin is to be aware of the other, and this proverb informs us of this truth.

Yet the proverb informs us of something very wise: even though we are forced to experience life through this system of duality (why god would create such a system is anyone's guess!) we can choose to focus on its silver lining. "By means of the whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread" suggests that it is through the recognition of all that is bad and evil that we may more greatly appreciate the good. We can't change that there is evil, but we can acknowledge it and, by doing so, better appreciate those things in life which are good.

And it is through all of this that we also develop a greater capacity for love and compassion as we dwell upon the fact that everyone in this world is equally subject to the inherent suffering of life.
