One of the more beguiling moments comes when a half naked young woman holds up the two yellow bricks and says: 'I think it was Mies van der Rohe who said "The basis of all structures is how a brick meets a brick". I think he was an architect. I think he was German.' Cut to a jolly boy-girl-boy threesome (as you do). This must be the first porno to mention Mies, unless there's a specialist architecture porn industry out there – where Le Corbusier shows Frank Lloyd Wright just how big his column is and where he'd like to put it…

Weiner-esque text occasionally flashes on the screen: 'AWAY FROM THE SAND'. Sand is made into glass. Glass is used to make skyscrapers. Man is taken away from the sand. I'm getting in to this, aren't I? Arrows flash before us and insinuate a diagram of order, or a direction of sexual energy. A naked man handstands on the two yellow bricks. The naked man erect – in both senses of the word – set upon two foundational stones becomes a column. Pornography and construction momentarily become homologous. (The subtitle on the poster is 'A Structure of Lawrence Weiner'.)

Yet for all this semantic onanism, I'm certainly not turned on, in the way you're meant to be in a cinema like this; and I don't think that's entirely to do with the surreal company I'm watching this flesh-fest with. One of the most enjoyable aspects of standard porn grammar, which Weiner jettisons entirely, is the set-up: a man innocently gardening, a nurse inspecting a patient, a distressed house-wife, a ship hijacked by pirates. And then suddenly, plot gives way to porn. It's usually a carefully orchestrated series of set piece scenes that give you what you want by providing you with what you've always already somehow seen before. Originality in porn takes place within the confines of the strictly unoriginal. Is art in the twenty-first century any different?

But hold on! Am I right in asking if all this is good porn/bad art? Or bad porn/good art? Or bad porn/bad art? The groans, the genital juices, the oral affections, the brash matter-of-fact explicitness – is all this just a decoy for the poetical-theoretical dialogue, or is it the other way around? Did Weiner just want to direct porn (allegedly one of the archetypal male fantasies)?

One of the most difficult scenes to watch – and therefore maybe one of the best – comes during the closing credits. It is of a woman lying on her back, pleasuring herself, her genitals occupying the centre of the screen. Unlike much of the rest of the film, which persistently cuts coital action short of climax with sudden and jagged editing (through boredom or over-excitement?); this scene has a strange continuity we have been denied so far. It is also, of course, an elaboration of Courbet's L'Origine du monde (1866) for the twenty-first century art-savvy punter.
