Favorite Christmas Songs

Deck The Halls - Julie Andrews

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Nice an Victorian. Makes you think that it was the song the carolers were singing when Scrooge was walking home from work, unaware of the haunting and change of heart to follow.

Huron Carol/Twas In the Moon of Wintertime - I love a song with a good story behind it, and this was written by a French missionary in Canada. In order to explain the Christmas story to the Huron tribes, he recast the story using their language and vocabulary. "Twas in the moon of wintertime, when all the birds had fled. That mighty Gitchi Manitou sent angel choirs instead."

Hark the Herald Angels Sing - Gets double super bonus points for playing for the climax of It's A Wonderful Life, not only my all time favorite movie, but a strong contender for the best movie ever made. "To my big b*****r, George: the richest man in town." AND A Charlie Brown Christmas. "Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!"

Angels We Have Heard on High - a traditional French carol, it is one of my favorites and one of the best versions I've ever heard is when Feist performed it on Stephen Colbert's Christmas special...with the lyrics about being put on 'Hold.' It makes me wish she would record a real version of it. "An authorized prayer technician will be with thee shortly."

Joy to the World

Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Bruce Springsteen *a text book example of how to take a classic and make it your own. A rolicking, ramshakle, raucous good time. Featuring the late great Clarence Clemmons as The Big Man himself.

Masters in this Hall

Good King Wenceslaus

Auld Lang Syne

The 12 Days of Christmas *NB I usually can't stand this song, but I love the John Denver and The Muppets version. Poor Fozzie keeps missing his cue!

Slowed Down Chipmunks Christmas Song *So, if you slow down the Chipmunks, you hear that it is grown men singing the part very slowly (it's actually David Seville tripple tracked singing all three parts) but when David talks in anormal voice, it is so slowed down he sounds like a demon from the deepest pits of hell. Super creepy!

Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight) - The Ramones *Because it is the song that most reflects what Christmas with my f****y is really like

The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole

Sleigh Ride – The Ronettes *Phil Spector may be a murderous weirdo, but damn if he can't produce a great single

Father Christmas – The Kinks *"Father Chritmas, give us some money! Don't mess around with those silly toys! We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over! Save all the toys...for the little rich boys!"

I Believe in Father Christmas – Greg Lake

I Am Santa Claus - Bob Rivers

okay, Jingle Bells is a little cheesey. But the barking dog version might be the best.

I don't see "White Christmas..."I'll Be Home For Christmas" or "Jingle Bells" on here...

Listen and tell me you wouldn't feel sneaky wrapping presents and listening to that at the same time.

And I find more or less the entire Nutcracker score to be very strong. I'm just not familiar enough with it to name specific parts.

lol I will PM you my reason for why I love that song so much. At least why I love it this year.

*is here*

I am not, have never been, and will never be a fan of Mariah Carey. I was going to put that song on the dishonorable mention list, but refrained since every girl in the world, including girls I hypothetically want to sleep with, just go bug nuts over that annoying song for reasons I can't fathom.

And "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies"!! I listen to that every year while wrapping Christmas presents... makes me feel sneaky, lol

Sheesh, I said 'more to come,' didn't I? Just because I didn't think of something right away with everything else. But here is Nat King Cole's version of 'O Holy Night.' Ya happy?

As for Carol of the Bells, it has been diluted by over use. I've heard it too many times, and too many were sup par versions or parodies for me to really get too excited over it anymore. Now it is hard for me to hear it without thinking "Die Hard is hear!"

And what about "All I Want For Christmas Is You"? That's such a great little sappy romantical Christmas song. :-)

Love from The Impudent Brat :p

How do you not have Carol of the Bells and O Holy Night on here???
