I think I should share...
I feel the media is not as diverse as it should be by now. Media like news stations, tabloids, and TV only show audiences what they know will get higher ratings, and that is to feed into people's preconceptions and stereotypes. Simply put - it is easier that way. People want their notions fed, no matter how ridiculous or prejudice those notions may be; they don't want to try and be "sold" another viewpoint, even if that viewpoint is more accurate than what they have chosen to believe.
I read somewhere that in the TV industry, they use typecasts a lot because the audience's minds are "lazy." We are so used to putting people in a category that we don't want to see a person that goes against our stereotypical beliefs. It's too much work for our brains for the sake of entertainment.
Some stereotypes/typecasts that I see on TV constantly that quite irritate me are representations of: black people, asians, blondes, fat people - to name just a few. Now, of course, there are people in these categories that might resemble the stereotype in some cases, but it is still just that - a stereotype. Not everyone in these categories fits into these typecasts, and what's even more insulting is that a lot of the time, the stereotype/prejudice is not explicitly presented. It is implied, which is worse. It's like, you just assume that we believe this nonsensical stereotype about a group of people so a joke is made, e.g. on a sitcom, and we are automatically expected to laugh like it's understood that people from a particular group really are that way.
As far as who is behind the scenes, obviously there are minorities and women along with white males making decisions, but I'm not so sure that their input is as weighty as a white male's. It should be at this point, but I don't think it is.
The media does not reflect society accurately. Society reflects the media to some extent because the media is where we mainly get our stereotypes from.
In order for change to happen, viewing audiences need to first examine their stereotypes, see if they really match up with reality, and decide what they truly believe; and since the media feeds into our preconceptions - if we change them, we change what the media chooses to put out there for the sake of ratings.
They're going to show us and tell us only what we want to see and hear.
